My Happy Colouring Flip Book is also an art therapy colouring book. It’s well known adult colouring books have a positive impact upon mental wellbeing. When engaged in repetitive focused action we can experience a sense of mindfulness or meditation that might be harder to achieve in other ways. Adult colouring books have been proven to alleviate tension. Creative therapy has long been established as an effective tool in treatment of mental health issues but it’s beneficial to everyone. A recent University of San Francisco study found doing creative activities outside work has anti-stress benefits but also helps mastery, control and relaxation at work.
As a teenager studying fine art at uni Stuart Semple suffered a sudden allergic reaction and a near-death experience. He left hospital with an acute anxiety disorder from the trauma. Reaching for his art as a coping mechanism he found the healing potential of creativity. Since then, Stuart has gone on to become one of the most acclaimed contemporary artists of his generation. He has held 15 successful solo exhibitions and 40 group exhibitions internationally. This is his first adult colouring book.
In 2013 Stuart Semple received a ‘Happiness Hero’ at the UN’s first international day of happiness. Being recognised for his art performance ‘HappyCloud’ where he filled London’s skyline with thousands of pink smiling clouds from outside Tate Modern. An action he has repeated in Italy, Russia, Ireland and Australia.
One Pound from the sale of this book will be donated to Mind.
One in four people experience a mental health problem every year, many feel unable to engage with traditional counselling or talking therapies, as the process of verbally expressing experiences or emotions can feel overwhelming. The Creative Therapies Fund has made £80,000 available in the last two years to provide grants of between £1,000 and £5,000 to a broad range of projects, from choral groups to creative writing or fine art mentoring programmes. They enable service users to express themselves without having to use words, in a therapeutic environment, with a trained therapist.
