“12 Bar Door”, (as part of the Ghosts exhibition), takes place in the window of the Fine Art Society on New Bond Street, where he has placed the door from Tin Pan Alley’s legendary venue The 12 Bar.
As one of the world’s most famous music destinations, Denmark Street saw Bowie sign his first record deal, Hendrix and The Stones buy their instruments and perform, and Sex Pistols take up residence.
The 12 Bar itself saw legendary performances by Adele, Jeff Buckley, Libertines and many more until developers condemned it along with the rest of the area’s musical heritage.
After brief occupation by squatting activists in an attempt to save the venue, the door was removed by police battering rams during the eviction, and now takes pride of place in the window of London’s oldest commercial art gallery.
